The Long Walk To Destiny: A Novel of Redemption and Reckoning
She wanted the truth about her past. She found a destiny forged in crime.
Maya Isaacs was searching for a sense of belonging that her fractured childhood could never give her. Raised by her single, over-protective father, Samuel, in Durban, South Africa, she was haunted by the mystery of her absent mother and the truth behind her family’s broken home. That desperate quest for identity led her not toward the light, but straight into the shadows.
Falling under the influence of the wrong peers, Maya is inducted into the Alternative Lifestyle Club (ALC), a perverse juvenile assembly that promises freedom and power. This secret society—led by the mysterious and ruthless Ms Diana and her enforcer, Craig—lures teenagers from broken homes, turning their vulnerability into criminal assets.
Maya quickly becomes immersed in the ALC’s high-stakes world of stealing, drug trafficking, and prostitution. She is seduced by the promise of finding her “destiny” in the forbidden and rises through the ranks, gaining notoriety among the region’s elite. But when Maya dares to challenge the Club, thinking her connections and newfound confidence can protect her, she learns a devastating lesson: the ALC is not an escape—it’s a cage.
Betrayed by the very people who claimed to guide her, Maya is set up, arrested, and sentenced to prison in Johannesburg. Stripped of her false identity, it is there—in the quiet despair of her cell—that she finally begins to realise that her self-made path to destiny was a lie. The only way forward is a perilous road to redemption.
But even after a merciful release orchestrated by an unexpected benefactor—the gold merchant, Van Brussels, whom she had wronged in the past—Maya cannot outrun the deep, lingering shadows of her former life.
From the Underworld to the Corporate Ladder
Following her release, Maya is given a second chance, whisked away to the United States for a secretarial education and a job at a prestigious shipping company. She excels, using her resilience and intelligence to climb the corporate ladder. She finds love with Daniel Young, the company’s handsome General Manager, and begins to build the purposeful, successful life she always craved.
Yet, as her life moves toward happiness and marriage, the actual ghosts of her past return. The family secrets about her birth, the truth of her father’s sacrifice, and the identity of the man who saved her life are all tied up in a complicated knot of guilt and regret.
Can Maya find lasting peace when her path to destiny was paved with crime and the betrayal of the man who loved her most?
The Long Walk To Destiny is a gripping psychological drama about enduring resilience, the painful cost of truth, and the enduring power of redemption. It is a testament to the fact that the path to who you are meant to be often requires walking through the deepest darkness.

Christy K. Cagle wrote:Rags to Riches in Durban
“The Long Walk To Destiny is a detailed account of an innocent only-child stepping out into a dangerous world. School lessons, schoolmates’ names and varied backgrounds in Durban, South Africa, are all carefully laid out. But Maya doesn’t know her mother, and the hole in her background drives her to trust the wrong people, mistrust the right, and enter an underworld of sexual assault, violent death, drugs and theft. Luckily, there’s a road back to the light. Forgiveness and healing can be found. And complex philosophy has a redemptive point in this novel.A rags-to-riches story, with action-movie undertones and careful explanation and detail, The Long Walk to Destiny never quite answers its titular question, but it raises hope for those whose wrong choices have led to wrong destinations. It’s an intriguing tale with fascinating insights into different lives.”

This is a book that will put life back into perspective. You’ll learn it’s never too late to do better; to achieve more.Chimezie does a great job of pulling his readers into his character’s world. Great job, Chimazie. I look forward to more from you.”

“Maya Isaacs was being raised by Samuel, the man who married and divorced her mother. When Maya tried to learn about her milieu from Samuel, she wasn’t satisfied with his story. She sought to find her destiny by joining the Alternative Lifestyle Group (ALG). The group got her involved in drug trafficking, prostitution, and thievery. Maya decided to steal money from an ALG drug sale, but was busted by the police and sent to prison. There she was ameliorated by a group of inmates and befriended by Van Brussels, a man she nearly killed earlier on. Released from prison early, she was educated as a secretary and given a job in a Brussels company. It was there she fell in love with Brussels’ adopted son. Her transformation was inspirational.”
Sometimes you have to take the more challenging path in life to end up where you need to be.
“Sometimes life doesn’t give you a fair hand. You might not have all the same things as those around you. That is the case for Maya. Growing up with only her father raising her, she was easy to brainwash into thinking that what she was being trained to do was for her and finding her destiny. After doing many things she would regret, she realised that what she was doing was wrong and wanted to make a change. This is a story that shows that even when you choose the wrong path in life. Things can always get better, as long as you stop going down the destructive path.”
